Benchmarking the banking sector of Bangladesh: a comprehensive analysis of performance and efficiency

Purpose The economic development of Bangladesh is heavily reliant on the banking industry, yet it faces numerous hurdles, including liquidity issues, capital shortages, non-performing loans, inefficiencies and so on. Therefore, this study investigated performance efficiency scheduled banks (state-owned, private commercial, foreign commercial specialized banks) operating in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach research was conducted using secondary data from annual reports banks. CAMELS rating system Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methods were employed to measure banks, respectively. Findings In overall bank rankings, results revealed that Standard Chartered Bank state-owned Sonali Limited came first last position, Among four categories best performer, while worst. Only two i.e. Citibank NA HSBC Bank, scale efficient remaining inefficient. terms efficiency, deemed wanting. Practical implications This proposes recommendations policymakers could lead more effective tactics for improving industry's efficiency. Originality/value As far as authors are concerned, presents empirical evidence different types explores comparisons among them, which has never been done extent country before.
